Top 8 Qualifiers Confirmed for HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2023

The Top 8 qualifiers for the world’s richest badminton tournament have been unveiled with the remaining places in the HSBC Race To Finals rankings sealed over the weekend.

Hangzhou, China plays host to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2023 from 13 to 17 December 2023, with a total prize pool of US$2.5 million on offer.

There are eight qualifying spots in each of the five categories, with a maximum of two players per Member Association, and a spot reserved for the reigning world champion.

Women’s Singles

Korea’s world champion An Se Young had an exceptional season with eight HSBC BWF World Tour titles from 10 finals, securing 119,890 points for first place. Olympic champion and local Hangzhou hero Chen Yu Fei finished second.

“I’m very happy that more and more international tournaments are coming to Hangzhou, and I feel very amiable to play in my hometown. I’ll enjoy the tournament itself and the atmosphere onsite. Compared to the last few times I participated in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2023, I feel that I am getting more mature. I will do my best to win the championship.” – Chen Yu Fei.

Third-placed qualifier Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi remains in injury doubt. Korea’s Kim Ga Eun is next in line, with her semifinal finish at the LI-NING China Masters 2023 bumping her to 70,650 points and ninth place overall.

Men’s Singles

Kodai Naraoka’s 11,000 points from his title win at the LI-NING China Masters 2023 saw him lead the men’s singles HSBC Race To Finals rankings with 89,520 points.

Denmark’s Anders Antonsen was the last player to sneak in, awaiting the result of the Naraoka versus Kenta Nishimoto all-Japanese final in Shenzhen to determine his fate.

Nishimoto’s runner-up finish gave him a total of 77,570 points, falling just short of Antonsen’s 78,110.

Women’s Doubles

Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan claimed top spot despite playing only 12 HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments. The world champions amassed 101,340 points thanks to five titles in seven finals.

Their young compatriots Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning, playing their first HSBC BWF World Tour season, qualified in fifth spot with 89,000 points.

Men’s Doubles

China’s Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chen vaulted into first place in the HSBC Race To Finals rankings on the back of their thrilling final win at the LI-NING China Masters 2023.

World champions Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae of Korea qualified in third place.

Mixed Doubles

Hong Kong China’s Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet and Chinese Taipei’s Ye Hong Wei/Lee Chia Hsin were neck-and-neck before the LI-NING China Masters 2023. With Tang/Tse winning their second-round clash and going on to make the semifinals, they secured seventh place, ahead of Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei.

Three pairs crossed 100,000 points – China’s Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping and Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong, and world champions Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said: “BWF is excited to promote Hangzhou as the official home of the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, with world-class facilities and infrastructure.

“The HSBC BWF World Tour Finals is our signature season-ending finale, and thanks to HSBC we have been able to increase our overall commitment to the sport and players.

“We look forward to welcoming the season’s best players to Hangzhou as they compete for their share of the $US2.5 million – the most in the history of badminton.”

The draw will be held during the annual HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Gala Dinner on Monday 11 December. The winners of the BWF Player of the Year Awards will also be announced.

HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Finds Home in Hangzhou

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) can confirm Hangzhou, China as host city of the season-ending HSBC BWF World Tour Finals for the next four years.

Starting 2023, BWF unveiled a 31-event new World Tour calendar, with more Super 1000, Super 750, and Super 500 tournaments, bringing greater prize money opportunities for players.

BWF is now delighted to reveal the prestigious HSBC BWF World Tour Finals will head to Hangzhou for the entire cycle.

Hangzhou is home of the 19th Asian Games and is the perfect location for international badminton’s showpiece event. The 2023 edition will take place from 13-17 December.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund thanked Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) and the Hangzhou City Government for their commitment to the sport.

“It is with great excitement to confirm Hangzhou, China as the host of our flagship HSBC BWF World Tour Finals for this cycle,” Lund said.

“Badminton is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world with all-time high participation and fan numbers and Hangzhou with its superb sporting infrastructure and experience in staging elite international events is an ideal host for our finals.

“We look forward to the tour’s top eight players and pairs in each category fighting it out for glory in front of thousands of passionate fans.”

Chinese Badminton Association President, and BWF Chair of Events, Zhang Jun, added: “We are delighted to work with the BWF and Hangzhou City Government to bring the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals to China.

“With its profound history and popularity here, badminton activities are ubiquitous in Hangzhou. It is an honour for the local government to be the host for the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals. And all top players around the world are welcomed to gather in the city.”

Further details on the 2023 edition of HSBC BWF World Tour Finals will be released in the coming weeks.

Kunlavut Vitidsarn

Viktor Axelsen

Zhao Yunlei (right) with Tian Qing at London 2012 Olympics after winning women’s doubles gold.

Shin Baekcheol.

Zhou Hao Dong and He Ji Ting provided the breakthrough for China.

Akane Yamaguchi kept Japan in the hunt.

Shi Yu Qi took advantage of an under-par Momota.

Chen Qing Chen is mobbed by her teammates after the women’s doubles victory gave the title to China.

Johnnie Torjussen.

The Week in Quotes

Who said what in and around the badminton world over the past week?

FROM SWISS OPEN 2024

“We are very good friends, when one of us is struggling, we pick each other back up. That’s what good partners do. We’ve learnt over the years, which is why we are still able to, even at tough times, produce good results. You just have to find a way sometimes when you are losing.”

Ben Lane on how his relationship with Sean Vendy has been key to their success as a pair.

“I had four championship chances but unfortunately couldn’t catch it. I need to learn this lesson, I need to be better next time.”

A disappointed Chou Tien after his final loss to compatriot Lin Chun Yi.

“Every athlete gets old. It’s a natural cycle, so this isn’t a goal of mine. I just want to compete against the world’s top players, do things right and have the proper mindset. Good results will follow.”

Replacing Chou as Chinese Taipei’s No.1 is not high on Lin’s agenda.

“I dedicate this title to my late father because he really wanted to see me win. In the future, I want to win at a higher level.”

Lanny Tria Mayasari after acing women’s doubles with Ribka Sugiarto.

FROM ELSEWHERE

“Always fight for your dreams, despite the challenges. Get stronger along the way and be proud of your position in sports by contributing to inspire future generations.”

BWF line judge Florencia Biracouritz’s message to female in sports.

“He’s just so calming, he’s so respectful of everything you have to say, because nothing you say can be wrong. It’s about your own feelings.”

Kirsty Gilmour on working with sports psychologist Misha Botting.

“The sport has surely evolved, but I wouldn’t compare it. Badminton is very fast today, but the fundamentals remain the same.”

Tan Boon Heong, former world No.1 in men’s doubles, on the sport’s evolution.

“Badminton taught me to persevere and push through difficult circumstances. Now, as a coach, it gives me the opportunity to share my passion with the next generation.”

Former Olympian Eva Lee, on using her experience when coaching junior players in the USA.

Smashing Stats: Spain Masters 2024

The five-edition-old Madrid Spain Masters 2024 by IBERDROLA rounds off five weeks of HSBC BWF World Tour action in Europe.

Let’s look at some fun facts about the Super 300 event.

  • Denmark have contested the most finals – 11.
  • With seven titles across four categories, they also top the performance table.
  • Indonesia, on six and with contenders in four departments, stand to overtake the Danes.
  • Korea have the best success rate of 80 per cent, winning four of five finals against other nations.
  • Their successes however, have not come outside doubles disciplines. This time around, their best bet is women’s singles third seed Kim Ga Eun.
  • Viktor Axelsen is the only shuttler to triumph more than once (2019, 2020).
  • Toma Junior Popov, Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, Pornpawee Chochuwong and Putri Kusuma Wardani can join him on that list.
  • Toma, men’s singles champ in 2021, is also competing in men’s doubles this year, with younger brother Christo.
  • Except Axelsen, Blichfeldt (2018-2019) and Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin (2019-2020), no player has played in consecutive finals.
  • Last year’s women’s singles runner-up Pusarla V. Sindhu is the sole player with a chance to do that.

Standout Stat: Kenta Nishimoto is the only non-European to win men’s singles (2023).

Nishimoto defeated Kanta Tsuneyama in an all-Japanese final.

Spain Masters: Attention on Lin Chun-Yi, Miyazaki

Three of four winners of this year’s HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournaments feature in the men’s singles draw of the Madrid Spain Masters 2024 by IBERDROLA.

Sixth seed Lin Chun-Yi, who won the YONEX Swiss Open 2024 on Sunday, will face fellow lefthander Lei Lan Xi in the first round. Lin has steadily risen up the ranks and is one of the players to watch this season.

Lin celebrating his title in Basel.

The prominent name in his quarter is his senior compatriot Chou Tien Chen, who he had beaten in Sunday’s final in a thriller. Chou won the first Super 300 of the year, the Thailand Masters in February.

The other Super 300 winner of this year in the draw is German Open winner Christo Popov, who is in the same quarter as second seed Loh Kean Yew.

In women’s singles, attention will be on Orleans Masters champion Tomoka Miyazaki, who created a sensation last week at the Swiss Open beating Pusarla V Sindhu and Aya Ohori on her way to the semifinals.

Second seed Pusarla gave glimpses of her best form at the All England, and will hope to go deep in the draw in Madrid, particularly in the absence of top 10 players. The draw opened up following the withdrawal of home star Carolina Marin, who won back-to-back tournaments the last two weeks.

Marin has opted to sit this edition out.

Apart from Marin, prominent withdrawals included Lakshya Sen, Kenta Nishimoto, Busanan Ongbamrungphan, Swiss Open winners Ben Lane/Sean Vendy, Margot Lambert/Anne Tran, Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith and Jiang Zheng Bang/Wei Ya Xin.

Swiss Open: Success on the Third Try

Having fallen in the final of the last two editions of the Swiss Open, Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie made no mistake in their third opportunity. The Malaysian mixed doubles duo outgunned compatriots Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei for their first HSBC BWF World Tour title in nearly six years at the YONEX Swiss Open 2024.

“This is our third year here, and we really wanted the gold,” said Lai. “We didn’t give up, we were steady from the first match and we supported each other no matter what happened on and off the court. We stayed on the attack and that gave us the advantage.

“Our emotional control was much better today. We didn’t put ourselves in a tight situation today, we kept believing in ourselves. We knew what we would do if we were cornered. It’s definitely a good confidence boost for us.”

Finals day of the Swiss Open saw some sensational matches.

Both Lin Chun-Yi in men’s singles and Carolina Marin in women’s singles emerged victorious by the thinnest of margins. Lin saved four match points against senior compatriot Chou Tien Chen in the second game and then survived a late comeback from his opponent to clinch the match 7-21 22-20 23-21.

Lin overjoyed at sealing his victory.

The women’s singles was just as keenly fought. Marin took home her second title in two weeks beating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung after saving two match points, 21-19 13-21 22-20.

“I fought until the end even when the game was a bit tough,” said Marin. “It was important to keep fighting and I gave my best on court. It’s not about the winning or not, but about the way I want to keep improving my game and myself.

“I made some mistakes and I gave a bit of confidence to my opponent. But in the third game I wanted to keep my focus on the things I have to do against her.”

Marin celebrates.

In men’s doubles, Ben Lane and Sean Vendy were involved in a titanic struggle with Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana; the English duo saved two game points in the first and four in the second to prevail in a cracker of a contest, 24-22 28-26 – giving them their first title since the Orleans Masters (Super 100) three years ago. It was also their first HSBC BWF World Tour title.

“Winning a tournament gives you massive confidence,” said Lane. “We haven’t won a tournament for two or three years, so to stand on top of the podium is what we train for every single day.

“It obviously means everything to us. It wasn’t the easiest start to the year, we had some tough draws, but we have also been playing some good badminton. So we know we are capable of producing results like this. We are very good friends, when one of us is struggling, we pick each other back up. That’s what good partners do. We’ve learnt that over the years, which is why we are still able to, even at tough times, produce good results. You just have to find a way sometimes when you are losing.”

World No.32 Indonesians Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto also won their first HSBC BWF World Tour crown, easing through in the third game against Hsu Ya Ching/Lin Wan Ching 13-21 21-16 21-8.

WHAT THEY SAID

“This is my first final of the year, and I’m happy with my performance. Marin was calmer at crucial points and controlled the points well. This final makes me more motivated to continue my performance going forward.”Tunjung

“I wanted to show fighting attitude here. In the first game I controlled the tempo and I was comfortable, but in the second game he sped up, and his smash was really strong. It was really hard and tight and I had four championships chances but unfortunately I could not catch it. I need to learn this lesson, I need to be better next time.”Chou

“I’m very happy. I just tried not to give up after losing the first game.”Lin

“It was almost like home with all the Indonesian supporters. Once we got used to the patterns of our opponents in the first game, we changed our approach and that helped us win.” – Sugiarto

“Luckily I could get back on court. It was almost a winning shot and I missed it. It’s a bit stiff. Thankfully I was able to carry on and win the game, because I’m not sure I would’ve been able to play a third. Credit to our resilience, really. We said to each other, let’s do this. We just stuck together. Our togetherness took us over the line.” – Vendy

Swiss Open: Tunjung to Face Marin in Final

Gregoria Mariska Tunjung made her first final of the year after beating Nozomi Okuhara at the YONEX Swiss Open 2024.

Tunjung, who had lost her previous two encounters to Okuhara and carried a 2-5 record going into Saturday’s semifinal, prevailed over the Japanese in 45 minutes, 21-15 21-17.

The Indonesian will face Carolina Marin, who is in her second final in two weeks. Marin overcame a testy phase against young Japanese Tomoka Miyazaki, who led her in both games before making a slew of errors.

The men’s singles final will be an all-Chinese Taipei affair between Chou Tien Chen and Lin Chun-Yi.

Both recovered from the loss of the opening game. Chou outplayed Rasmus Gemke 19-21 21-11 21-12, while Lin was able to overcome his opponent Kidambi Srikanth in the late stages of their semifinal.

Milestone for Lane/Vendy

Ben Lane and Sean Vendy gave themselves a shot at a first HSBC BWF World Tour title as they made the final of the Swiss Open.

The England pair beat Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani 20-22 21-8 21-15 to prevent an all-Indonesia final after Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana had earlier made their way to the title round. The previous best performance of the England pair was a title win at the Orleans Masters 2021 when it was a BWF Tour Super 100 event.

Other Highlights

» The mixed doubles will be an all-Malaysian final with Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai Jemie winning their semifinals in straight games.

» Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto made their first Super 300 final after a thrilling contest against compatriots Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, 13-21 21-10 23-21.

No Relaxing for History-Nearing Opeyori

Despite being in a strong position to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori is not taking anything for granted.

The Nigerian underlined his status as his continent’s best men’s singles player by defending his African title – his third in a row – in Cairo in February. He followed that up with a gold medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana a few weeks later.

Currently, the 26-year-old is comfortably the highest-ranked African on the Race to Paris standings.

“The race is not over yet, but I’m in a strong position to qualify,” Opeyori told aclsports.com.

“Qualification ends next month, so I must keep playing more international tournaments until then. I don’t have pressure but I don’t want to relax until everything is over.”

Opeyori’s recent triumphs are timely.

“It’s very much welcome because it’s just when I needed the points the most for my qualification,” the four-time African champion told Sports 247. “I’m happy with my progress and hopefully I continue this streak.

“I’m looking forward to improving my game, my strokes, everything. Because I’ll be playing some higher-ranked players (at the Olympics) and they are really quick and have everything. I’m already looking forward to managing the situation, get over it and probably nick a win.”

Opeyori made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games but in the doubles discipline, with Godwin Olofua. They lost all their Group B matches to Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe, Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov.

If he is successful in securing his berth at Paris 2024, Opeyori will become the first Nigerian men’s singles player to do so since Kayode Akinsanya at Atlanta 1996.

Defending Champs India in Tricky Group

Thomas Cup defending champions India found themselves in tricky Group C as the draw for the TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2024 was conducted today in the host city of Chengdu.

India, who won the Thomas Cup for the first time in 2022, were drawn alongside 14-time champions Indonesia, Thailand and England in Group C.
