Xiamen is located in the southeastern part of Fujian Province, at the estuary of the Jiulong River. It borders Zhangzhou to the south, Quanzhou to the north, and faces Kinmen Island to the east. As one of China’s first four Special Economic Zones, Xiamen covers a totaled area of 1,699 square kilometers and a sea area of approximately 333 square kilometers. The city comprises six administrative districts—Siming, Huli, Jimei, Haicang, Tong’an, and Xiang’an—with a registered population of 3.028 million and a permanent population of 5.327 million.
Rich Historical Heritage
Xiamen’s history dates back to the Western Jin Dynasty, when Tong’an County was established. During the Song Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Tong’an County in Quanzhou Prefecture. In the 27th year of Emperor Hongwu’s reign in the Ming Dynasty (1394), the city was fortified and named “Xiamen” to defend against pirates. Later in the Qing Dynasty, Zheng Chenggong stationed his troops here and established Siming Prefecture. Xiamen was set up as a special municipality in 1933, retaining its name ever since.
